I have recently joined the 40’s club, where they say you have more wisdom and vitality and your life takes on a new meaning. As I sit here and write this post, I find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here, with all of the highs and lows of life.
Turning 40 isn’t just a number, it is huge shift, a transition into a chapter of self-discovery, growth and a renewed sense of purpose. I find myself wondering who I am again and feeling like a twenty year old trapped in an older body. I may get more wrinkles, but I also hope to have more laughter lines etched into my face from moments of joy.
At forty, you find out life is not perfect, your hair is graying, and wrinkles are showing. Yet, in this imperfection lies the beauty of experience. – Albert Einstein
Whether you’ve just turned 40 or are already savoring this decade, this post is for you. Let’s discuss these changes together and share stories, insights and the wisdom that we’ve gained over the years.
So I make a toast to turning 40, to the life that awaits, woven with threads of love, promise and exciting new adventures. The journey begins now.
Navigating Middle Aged Changes
Turning 40 comes with a host of different physical changes. Hair turning gray (thankfully mine hasn’t yet, but that’s what dye is for, right?), laugh lines across the face and a body that has been challenged by life experiences. It’s an age where we learn to embrace these changes as badges of honor. Instead of resisting the changes and being sad about looking older, we should celebrate the resilience and that they represent and find joy in the unique beauty that comes with each year. Never let anyone make you feel like you are old and ugly. You are beautiful and any wrinkles, scars or gray hair is a symbol of wisdom and experience.
Our minds and our emotions also undergo a huge transformation. Lessons learned from past challenges become stepping stones toward a greater intelligence for emotions and experiences. At this age you gain a new kind of clarity and a deeper understanding of yourself. Let’s acknowledge the growth that accompanies this age and appreciate the wisdom that we gain, both good and bad.
There’s a liberating power in relinquishing the weight of expectations—both societal and self-imposed. Turning 40 marks a juncture where we shed the should-haves and embrace the authentic journey we’re on. It’s about letting go of the timelines we thought we should follow and allowing ourselves the freedom to define success and happiness on our terms. By releasing the grip of expectations, we create space for unforeseen opportunities and a more genuine connection with ourselves. After all, the most fulfilling path is often the one we pave for ourselves.
Reimagining Dreams
In the vast landscape of the forties, dreams are not abandoned but rather reimagined. I find myself wondering where I lost myself in the whirldwind of life. What happened to the dreams and ambitions that I had? When did I stop to ask myself what I want? I was too busy taking care of everyone else’s needs instead of my own. This is the era of pursuing aspirations with a blend of wisdom and enthusiasm.

Whether it’s a career shift, a creative endeavor, or a personal goal, the forties provide the perfect time to start working on yourself. It’s about acknowledging that the journey is ongoing, and the best may be yet to come. And it’s also about remembering that our time is limited and you should go after what you want NOW, before it’s too late.
Self-Care as a Priority
The forties mark a significant moment to embrace taking care of yourself as a non-negotiable priority. Physical, mental, and emotional well-being should all take precedence. As our bodies age and they change, we must do more work to keep ourselves healthy, both mentally and physically. I myself noticed that I had gained too much weight and I was unhappy with myself. The older I get, the easier it is to gain weight and the harder it is to lose it.
So I started a routine that I try to follow every day to get my weight down. For me, it is also helping my mental health as I have more energy and more confidence. It’s about understanding that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s a prerequisite for showing up fully in every aspect of life. From mindful practices to nurturing hobbies, self-care should become an essential part of the daily routine.
Navigating Midlife Transitions
Midlife transitions are both exhilarating and challenging. Whether it’s an empty nest, a career pivot, or a reevaluation of life goals, the forties usher in a period of significant change. Navigating these transitions requires a blend of courage and adaptability. It’s about being open to new possibilities and understanding that life’s script is still being written.
Life begins at 40, and so does the freedom to be your authentic self without apology. – Diane Von Furstenberg
You may have to make tough decisions to do what is best for you so that you can better yourself and be happy. No one said life was easy. It comes with it’s ups and downs. Now is the time to make the changes that you want to get what you want out of life.
Celebrating Achievements
Turning 40 is a great moment to celebrate achievements, both big and small. Each milestone becomes a marker of personal triumph—a testament to resilience, determination, and the ability to weather storms. Whether it’s a career accomplishment, a personal goal achieved, or simply survinging this crazy thing called life, taking time to revel in these accomplishments is a vital part of the journey. Be proud of yourself and the things that you have experienced and overcome, for those are the things that made you who you are today.
As I raise my glass to the 40s, I embrace the complexity, the beauty, and the infinite possibilities that lie ahead. The forties are not just a chapter; they are a narrative unfolding with each passing day. So here’s to resilience, to reimagining dreams, and to making positive changes. May this decade be filled with continued growth, joy, and a sense of purpose that propels us forward. Cheers to the journey!
