As the rain orchestrates its own symphony outside, I’m here, cozying up with my coffee, reminiscing about the trusty cleaning superheroes that have been by my side through thick and thin. From shiny newcomers to loyal old-timers, I’ve rounded up the ultimate squad of cleaning champions. Join me as we journey through my top picks for sprucing up every nook and cranny of the house, from the kitchen to the bathroom. So, grab your umbrella and let’s jump right into the splash zone of squeaky-clean goodness!

*Note: I do not make any money from these reviews and suggestions. There are no ads on my website and all products listed below are purely from my own experience.

Kitchen KonMari: My Top Weapons for Spotless Satisfaction!

When it comes to cleaning the kitchen, you can face many challenges, especially when it comes to dishes and appliances. The countertops are often the easiest thing to clean, but what about taking that stove apart and also cleaning the oven?  We may be diving into some deep cleaning territory here, but no matter what you’re cleaning in the kitchen, I have a recommendation for it. Let’s start with the basics, the all purpose cleaner.

409: My Favorite All Purpose Spray

A bottle of 409 cleaning spray.

I know many of you lean towards natural, eco-friendly options, and trust me, I’ve explored plenty! From DIY concoctions to popular brands like Mrs. Meyer’s, I’ve tested them all. Yet, amidst the green alternatives, there’s one unsung hero that keeps pulling me back: the mighty 409. It’s my go-to for all things kitchen-related, from countertops to fridge interiors and that stubborn stove grease. Like a ninja of kitchen grime, it slashes through grease with ease, making cleanup a breeze. While it’s versatile for bathroom and beyond, it’s truly the kitchen’s best ally. If you haven’t given it a whirl, now’s the time to unleash its cleaning prowess!

Dawn Dish Soap: Your Ultimate Ally for Gleaming Clean Dishes

Is there truly a better option for dishes? I’ve tested the bargain brands, the eco-friendly alternatives, but let’s not forget, even Dawn takes the environment seriously. Not only does it tackle dishes with ease, but it’s also safe for your furry friends and versatile enough to clean your entire home. Unlike many competitors, Dawn’s powerful formula cuts through grease like a champ. Personally, I swear by the EZ Squeeze bottle – no leaks, no hassle, just squeeze and go! While it might come with a slightly higher price tag, its concentrated formula means it lasts longer than your average dish soap. Trust me, it’s those little conveniences that make all the difference. If you haven’t already added it to your cleaning arsenal, it’s time to grab a bottle and simplify your life!

Conquering Your Oven Woes: Making Cleaning a Breeze

Easy Off fume free oven cleaner

If you’ve ever Googled ways to clean your oven, you know the struggle of sifting through countless methods recommended by various folks. I’ve personally experimented with several, and while the baking soda and vinegar combo with a splash of Dawn does the trick, there’s now a hassle-free option: fume-free sprays. Honestly, any oven cleaner will do the job, especially if you let it sit and penetrate the grime. Short on time? Opt for Easy Off’s fume-free version, but don’t forget to let it work its magic with a little soaking time before diving in.

Tackling the Dreaded Chore: Mastering Bathroom Cleaning

Let’s face it, cleaning the bathroom isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of a good time. But when you consider the alternative – a grimy throne versus a sparkling one – the choice becomes clear. So, what’s the toughest spot to tackle in the bathroom? The toilet, with its nooks and crannies, often requires some serious contortionist moves to get it spotless. Then there’s the bathtub, especially if it’s made of old porcelain or stone, which can be a real challenge. I’ve had my fair share of battles with stubborn stains, especially in my vintage 60’s-era tub, until a friend introduced me to my savior: The Pink Stuff.

Yes, that’s its name! Whether it’s a brown bathtub or stubborn stains, this paste works wonders. Just apply, let it sit, and then give it a good scrub – your bathroom will thank you!

I have an electric spinbrush that I really love that makes cleaning my bathtub take less than half the time it used to.

Conquering the Throne: Cleaning the Toilet Bowl

Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleach

While I’m a huge fan of The Pink Stuff and their fantastic range of cleaning products, when it comes to cleaning the inside of our toilet, there’s only one product I trust: Clorox toilet bowl cleaner. It’s hands down the best I’ve ever used, with a design that makes it incredibly easy to handle. Just flip it, squeeze, and let it work its magic for a few minutes. I prefer the bleach version for its extra cleaning power, but there’s also a bleach-free option available. Trust me, once you make the switch from your current cleaner to Clorox, you’ll thank yourself later.

Make Those Bathroom Surfaces Shine

Alright, folks! We’ve tackled the tub and conquered the commode, but now it’s time to dive into the nitty-gritty of bathroom surface sparkle! Picture this: countertops gleaming, toilet sides shining, and even those bathtub walls twinkling! Enter stage left: The Pink Stuff, our trusty sidekick in the war against grime. It’s got a spray version that’s your go-to for sprucing up countertops and every nook and cranny in your bathroom. Take your pick between the bathroom foam cleaner and the all-purpose spray – it’s all about what floats your cleaning boat! Personally, I’m all aboard the bathroom cleaner train; it’s been my secret weapon for a squeaky-clean bathroom bliss!

Mirror Madness: Making Your Mirror Spot FreeWindex Glass Cleaner

Listen up, folks, because when it comes to cleaning glass or mirrors, there’s one superstar that shines brighter than the rest: Windex, the undisputed champion in my cleaning arsenal! Sure, you could dabble with off-brands or whip up a homemade concoction with vinegar, but let me tell you, nothing beats the streak-free, crystal-clear magic of Windex. Trust me, I’ve been in the cleaning game for years, and I’ve put Windex through the wringer – it always comes out on top. Sure, you might think splurging a few extra bucks is a stretch, but believe me, it’s worth every penny. Think about it: you’ll end up using more of those other products just to match Windex’s sparkle! And as for all-natural alternatives? While they’re great for some things, they just can’t hold a candle to the reigning champ: Windex, the true king of clean!

Tile Floors: My Top Pick for a Gleamin’ Clean!

I’m all about tile or hard floors over carpet any day! Carpets tend to trap dust and allergens that mess with my sinuses, plus they’re a pain to clean. Tile floors? Super easy to sweep and mop, with no hidden dirt in fibers.

Speaking of cleaning, I’m obsessed with Mr. Clean, especially the Gain-scented one. Gain smells amazing, but there are plenty of other scents to choose from too. If you’re a clean freak like me, start with a Swiffer Sweeper after sweeping to catch any leftover dust. Then, mix some Mr. Clean with hot water and mop away for that perfect, fresh clean.

Let’s Wrap It Up and Get Cleaning

And there you have it, folks! From the kitchen to the bathroom, we’ve covered all the cleaning bases with my trusty team of top-notch products. Whether you’re dealing with greasy stovetops, stubborn bathroom stains, or just keeping those tile floors sparkling, these cleaning superheroes have got you covered. So, the next time you’re ready to tackle those household chores, remember this squad of champions. Grab your favorite cleaner, turn up the music, and let’s make every corner of your home shine!

Happy cleaning, and may your home always be as fresh and fabulous as you are!

Embracing 40: A New Chapter Begins

Embracing 40: A New Chapter Begins

I have recently joined the 40’s club, where they say you have more wisdom and vitality and your life takes on a new meaning.  As I sit here and write this post, I find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here, with all of the highs and lows of life.

Turning 40 isn’t just a number, it is huge shift, a transition into a chapter of self-discovery, growth and a renewed sense of purpose. I find myself wondering who I am again and feeling like a twenty year old trapped in an older body. I may get more wrinkles, but I also hope to have more laughter lines etched into my face from moments of joy.

At forty, you find out life is not perfect, your hair is graying, and wrinkles are showing. Yet, in this imperfection lies the beauty of experience. – Albert Einstein

Whether you’ve just turned 40 or are already savoring this decade, this post is for you. Let’s discuss these changes together and share stories, insights and the wisdom that we’ve gained over the years.

So I make a toast to turning 40, to the life that awaits, woven with threads of love, promise and exciting new adventures. The journey begins now.

Navigating Middle Aged Changes

Turning 40 comes with a host of different physical changes.  Hair turning gray (thankfully mine hasn’t yet, but that’s what dye is for, right?), laugh lines across the face and a body that has been challenged by life experiences.  It’s an age where we learn to embrace these changes as badges of honor.  Instead of resisting the changes and being sad about looking older, we should celebrate the resilience and that they represent and find joy in the unique beauty that comes with each year. Never let anyone make you feel like you are old and ugly. You are beautiful and any wrinkles, scars or gray hair is a symbol of wisdom and experience.

Our minds and our emotions also undergo a huge transformation.  Lessons learned from past challenges become stepping stones toward a greater intelligence for emotions and experiences. At this age you gain a new kind of clarity and a deeper understanding of yourself.  Let’s acknowledge the growth that accompanies this age and appreciate the wisdom that we gain, both good and bad.

There’s a liberating power in relinquishing the weight of expectations—both societal and self-imposed. Turning 40 marks a juncture where we shed the should-haves and embrace the authentic journey we’re on. It’s about letting go of the timelines we thought we should follow and allowing ourselves the freedom to define success and happiness on our terms. By releasing the grip of expectations, we create space for unforeseen opportunities and a more genuine connection with ourselves. After all, the most fulfilling path is often the one we pave for ourselves.

Reimagining Dreams

In the vast landscape of the forties, dreams are not abandoned but rather reimagined. I find myself wondering where I lost myself in the whirldwind of life. What happened to the dreams and ambitions that I had? When did I stop to ask myself what I want? I was too busy taking care of everyone else’s needs instead of my own. This is the era of pursuing aspirations with a blend of wisdom and enthusiasm.

Embrace your dreams, no matter how wild they may seem. The journey of pursuing your passions is where the true magic unfolds. – Oprah Winfrey

Whether it’s a career shift, a creative endeavor, or a personal goal, the forties provide the perfect time to start working on yourself. It’s about acknowledging that the journey is ongoing, and the best may be yet to come. And it’s also about remembering that our time is limited and you should go after what you want NOW, before it’s too late.

Self-Care as a Priority

The forties mark a significant moment to embrace taking care of yourself as a non-negotiable priority. Physical, mental, and emotional well-being should all take precedence. As our bodies age and they change, we must do more work to keep ourselves healthy, both mentally and physically.  I myself noticed that I had gained too much weight and I was unhappy with myself. The older I get, the easier it is to gain weight and the harder it is to lose it.

Note: This is not me, but it is a beautiful picture.

So I started a routine that I try to follow every day to get my weight down. For me, it is also helping my mental health as I have more energy and more confidence. It’s about understanding that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s a prerequisite for showing up fully in every aspect of life. From mindful practices to nurturing hobbies, self-care should become an essential part of the daily routine.

Navigating Midlife Transitions

Midlife transitions are both exhilarating and challenging. Whether it’s an empty nest, a career pivot, or a reevaluation of life goals, the forties usher in a period of significant change. Navigating these transitions requires a blend of courage and adaptability. It’s about being open to new possibilities and understanding that life’s script is still being written.

Life begins at 40, and so does the freedom to be your authentic self without apology. – Diane Von Furstenberg

You may have to make tough decisions to do what is best for you so that you can better yourself and be happy. No one said life was easy. It comes with it’s ups and downs. Now is the time to make the changes that you want to get what you want out of life.

Celebrating Achievements

Turning 40 is a great moment to celebrate achievements, both big and small. Each milestone becomes a marker of personal triumph—a testament to resilience, determination, and the ability to weather storms. Whether it’s a career accomplishment, a personal goal achieved, or simply survinging this crazy thing called life, taking time to revel in these accomplishments is a vital part of the journey. Be proud of yourself and the things that you have experienced and overcome, for those are the things that made you who you are today.

As I raise my glass to the 40s, I embrace the complexity, the beauty, and the infinite possibilities that lie ahead. The forties are not just a chapter; they are a narrative unfolding with each passing day. So here’s to resilience, to reimagining dreams, and to making positive changes. May this decade be filled with continued growth, joy, and a sense of purpose that propels us forward. Cheers to the journey!

My Catsup Free Meatloaf

My Catsup Free Meatloaf

Everyone seems to love their meatloaf with catsup, so I must have the “unpopular opinion” of preferring my meatloaf catsup free.  If my family members wish to have catsup on their meatloaf, they can have it on the side or put it on themselves once it is done cooking and on their plate.  I’m not a big fan of catsup and I prefer to taste my seasoned food rather than drench it in sauce.  I make my meatloaf a little different from everyone else, although I suppose there are many different variations all over the world depending on where you live.  I like to serve this with brown gravy, mashed potatoes and brocolli on the side.  You can serve it however you like!  I hope you enjoy it.

Note: If you need more moisture to your meatloaf, just add more worcestershire or whatever sauce you like.

The Art of Aging Gracefully: Overcoming Aches and Pains

The Art of Aging Gracefully: Overcoming Aches and Pains

Ouch, my back!  What was that and why am I feeling this way?  I’m sure that we have all experienced some sort of ache or pain like this as we age. As the years move on, our bodies start playing pranks on us, like muscles going on strike and joints becoming less bendy. It’s like Mother Nature’s way of saying, “Welcome to the club of aging,  you get a front row seat!”

I know that I am only just pushing the big 4-0, but I have started having unexplainable pains that I am not used to having.  For example, this past week I have been waking up with back pain almost every night.  I’ve started wondering if I’m sleeping wrong or if I’m just getting old.  When I work out, I have discovered that I have now started getting cramps in my legs, sometimes for days.

Age is merely the number of years the world has been enjoying you. Don’t let your joints tell you otherwise. – Anonymouse

These are problems that I didn’t ever have before and sometimes I just don’t understand why I am getting them now.  Now I think that I’m just aging and it’s getting even harder and harder to stay in shape because of the pain I experience on a frequent basis.

In this blog, I’ll share my personal journey dealing with various aches and pains and the tricks I’ve tested to try and manage the change of aging.

Cracking the Middle-Age Code: What’s Behind that Pain?

As we grow older, it’s natural for us to notice new aches and pains.  These discomforts tend to be more common as we age due to several different factors.  One key factor is the natural aging process.  Our bodies do go through changes over time, including a decrease in muscle mass and bone density.  This can lead to a decreased ability to withstand physical stress.  Additionally, years of wear and tear from physical activity, such as bending, lifting, playing sports and even just sitting at your desk, can cause aches and pains later on in life.

Other lifestyle factors also play a part like stress, sendentary behavior and poor dietary choices.  Addressing these aches and pains are critical, not only for your physical well being, but also for maintaining a higher quality of life as you grow older.  Ignoring these issues can seriously impact daily activities, emotional well being and overall happiness.  Therefore, it is important to take steps now to learn how to manage and alleviate these discomforts so that you can enjoy your future.

The Daily Grind: Middle-Age’s Most Annoying Aches and Pains

As we age we often find ourselves dealing with a range of different aches and pains that can impact our every day lives, including the simplest takes.  Among these, back pain reigns supreme as the most common complaint. According to a study published by the CDC in 2019, The percentage of adults with back pain increased with age, from 28.4% for those aged 18–29 and 35.2% for those aged 30–44 to 44.3% for those aged 45–64 and 45.6% for those aged 65 and over.¹

The demands of middle age can often lead to strains and discomfort in other muscles, too.  Joint stiffness can also be another frequent vistor, particularly in the morning or after long periods of sitting and standing.  Other joints, such as the knees and hips, start losing their flexibility, thus making movement less fluid and graceful.  WebMD² wrote a blog post that says:

More than 32.5 million adults have OA-related joint pain, aching, stiffness, or limited mobility. But you can have stiff joints without OA. In fact, you can have stiff joints without any clear cause. Blame it on getting older. The connective tissue in your tendons and ligaments gets stiffer as you age. Also, loss of muscle strength as you age can increase pressure on your joints, especially your knees.

You might find that those splits you could do before aren’t so easy to pull off anymore!  Muscle soreness, such as those leg cramps I mentioned earlier, can also become a frequent companion, visiting you every time you decide to be active.  It’s important to talk about your symptoms with your doctor if these pains are keeping your from performing your normal daily tasks.

How Aches & Pains Affect Your Body & Mind

Aches and pains that come with middle age can really disrupt our daily lives. They affect our body and our mood, making even the simplest tasks feel like major challenges. Physically, these aches slow us down. Everyday activities like bending down to pick something up or just taking a walk can become frustrating when pain is constantly tagging along. When was the last time you said “Nope, I’m not bending over”?

Moreover, these aches can mess with our sleep patterns. A night of tossing and turning due to pain can leave us feeling drained and less ready to tackle the day.  As I stated earlier in this blog article, I have been waking up nearly every night with back pain.  This has been causing me to lose sleep, making me less productive during the day.  So if you think that this pain can’t affect your daily routine, I’m here to tell you that is not the case.  It can drastically affect your quality of life.

As if that’s not enough, these aches might tempt us to skip exercise and become less active. Who wants to work out or excersize when they are already in pain?  This means that you are just going to be putting yourself through more pain while you are already in pain. However, inactivity can weaken our muscles further and leave us feeling even worse.

On the emotional front, chronic pain can take a toll on your mental well-being. It can stress you out and make you anxious. The never-ending discomfort can grate on your nerves, making the pain feel even worse. Additionally, it can affect your mood, leading to feelings of irritability or sadness.  I know that when I am end pain, I tend to be more “snappy” when I am speaking to someone.  I don’t mean to be that way, but it’s hard to communicate when there is a constant pain that you can’t stop thinking about. Coping with this pain day in and day out can be emotionally draining and mentally exhausting.

As we age, our bodies tell stories of our lives. Mine speaks of a love for movement and a few tales of joint rebellion. – Anonymous

So, dealing with these aches isn’t just about finding physical relief. By recognizing how pain can affect our mood and taking steps to address both the physical and emotional aspects, we can work towards a happier life.

Crushing the Pain: Effective Tactics for Aches and Discomfort

Dealing with aches and pains in middle age may seem like an inevitable part of the journey, but there are of steps you can take to regain control and find relief. These strategies encompass not only addressing the pain itself. but also adopting a holistic approach to overall well-being.

Exercise: Regular physical activity can work wonders for managing aches and pains. Consider low-impact exercises like swimming, yoga, or walking. These activities help improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, and support joint health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, breaking it down into manageable sessions.

I like to try to excersize for 30 minutes a day starting out, then gradually increase that time to roughly an hour. Sometimes I get unmotivated and then I have to start over.  If this happens to you please keep in mind that some movement is better than no movement. I know that it’s hard to excersize when you are already in pain, but it is essential to keep your body moving.

Diet: I know that no one wants to hear this, because I don’t want to hear it either!  But, your diet does play a crucial role in managing aches and pains. Try including foods that are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, like fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), leafy greens, and berries. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can help reduce inflammation, while antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can help with pain relief. Additionally, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as dehydration can exacerbate muscle soreness and lead to frequent headaches.

Lifestyle Changes: Changing your lifestyle can make a significant difference.  You can no longer live like you are in your roaring twenties, going full throttle at a moments notice.

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change. – Jim Rohn

It is important to maintain good posture to reduce the strain on your back and neck. Also make sure that you are getting enough sleep, as poor sleep can intensify pain. Try out some stress-reduction techniques like meditation or deep breathing exercises to manage emotional stress, which can make physical discomfort even worse.

Ergonomics: Pay attention to ergonomics in your everyday life. Invest in an ergonomic chair, mouse and keyboard and set up your workspace to reduce strain on your back, neck, and wrists. Use proper lifting techniques to avoid straining your muscles.

If your pain cointinues to get worse, it’s essential to seek professional guidance. A healthcare provider or physical therapist can provide personalized recommendations and treatments tailored to your specific needs.  You might even consider seeing a chiropractor or getting a massage. By incorporating these practical tips and lifestyle changes into your routine, you can take significant steps toward managing and alleviating aches and pains, ultimately improving your quality of life. Remember that consistency is key, and it’s never too late to start prioritizing your well-being.

Wrapping It Up: Key Takeaways

In closing, the journey through middle age often comes with an unexpected companion – aches and pains. These discomforts can make daily tasks feel like uphill battles and disrupt our sleep, leaving us feeling drained. They might tempt us to become less active, further weakening our muscles and affecting our overall well-being. Emotionally, chronic pain can lead to stress, anxiety, irritability, and even bouts of sadness. However, it’s important to remember that dealing with these aches isn’t just about physical relief. By recognizing how they affect our mood and taking steps to address both the physical and emotional aspects, we can work towards a happier, more fulfilling life as we age.

Mexican Casserole

Mexican Casserole

My family and I just love “Mexican” cuisine or what a lot of us refer to as Tex-Mex.  Note that we also love authentic Mexican food, but any variation of it is always enjoyed by my family. Tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, chimichangas, and even menudo!  When my friend shared this recipe for “Mexican Casserole” on her Facebook page, I just knew I had to try it out.  To make sure I give the proper place credit, she shared the recipe from another page called Easy DIY Recipes.

This recipe reminds me of a recipe that I’ve been making for a long time called Chicken Dorito Casserole because of the use of the cream of chicken soup and rotel. However, it’s main ingredients are much different and I don’t put beans in the Chicken Dorito Casserole.  I also haven’t made the Chicken Dorito Casserole in a very long time because it’s just not healthy, so I was happy to try out this recipe.  Note that the original recipe calls for different measurements and a different way of layering.  I found that with 1 LB of ground beef, it was hard to layer a 13×9 inch dish.  So next time I tried this recipe I used 2LB and that worked much better.  We even had leftovers for the family to take in lunches the next day!

Mexican Casserole

This mexican casserole is easy to throw together for a quick weeknight meal.

Cuisine Mexican
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 2 LB Ground Beef
  • 1 Can of Rotel
  • 1 Can of Cream of Chicken or Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 1 Can of Ranch Style Beans
  • 1 Package of Yellow Corn Tortillas
  • 1 8 oz Package of Shredded Fiesta Blend Cheese

Instructions

  • Brown the ground beef and drain.
  • Add the Rotel, Ranch Style beans and soup to the meat and mix well. Continue to heat up until mixture is hot. Remove from heat.
  • Place a layer of corn tortillas on the bottom of a 13x9 inch pan. You may need to tear them to place them in a way to ensure the bottom of the pan is covered.
  • Place some of the meat mixture on top of the tortillas, being sure to cover all tortillas with some of the meat. Use about half of the meat.
  • Lightly sprinkle some of the cheese over this layer.
  • Add another layer of corn tortillas, tearing if needed to fit.
  • Add another layer of the meat mixture.
  • Sprinkle another layer of cheese lightly and evenly over the top.
  • At this point, you can put this in the oven or you can add another layer of corn tortillas and cover it with cheese. Note if you do decide to do another layer of tortillas on the top, ensure they are completely covered with shredded cheese.
  • Cook in the oven at 350℉ for about 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and tortillas are soft.

Notes

You can serve this with chips and salsa on the side, or even have sour cream or guacamole on the side.  Do what works best for your family.
Family Adventures in Broken Bow: A Memorable Getaway

Family Adventures in Broken Bow: A Memorable Getaway

Living in Northeast Texas allows us to explore neighboring states without long drives. I decided to plan a getaway to Broken Bow, Oklahoma, because it’s conveniently close to us. Let me tell you, this trip quickly became a cherished memory for us. We were bubbling with excitement as we packed our bags, eager to escape the confines of our daily routine and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and delightful experiences that Broken Bow offers.

In this blog post, I’ll take you along on our journey, sharing all the places we discovered and the cozy cabin we called home during our stay in Broken Bow. It’s a tale of adventure, relaxation, and family bonding that I’m thrilled to recount. So, buckle up, and let’s dive into the captivating world of our Broken Bow escapade.

Getting Ready for Our Broken Bow Adventure

Once I had our location selected and our dates picked out, it was time to try and find a place to stay. I wanted to be close to town but also have some privacy. I prefer to avoid staying in overcrowded areas or sites with cabins stacked next to each other, like apartment buildings. My favorite service for this is VRBO, but I also looked around on local sites using Google to search “cabins in Broken Bow, OK.” I found a lovely place, which I will share later on, and chose the length of our stay.

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” – John Muir

What you take with you will largely depend on where you stay. Every location has its different amenities and supplies. The cabin I decided to book had everything we needed other than food and, of course, our clothes and personal belongings. I highly recommend taking food with you or finding a local Walmart or discount store to stop at rather than shopping at the grocery store in Broken Bow. The prices are high because it is a tourist location and it’s easy for visitors to get to. If you are going during the summer, make sure that you take your swimming clothes with you if you plan on going swimming.

You can download a handy checklist of things to pack here, no email signup required.

Remember to adapt these suggestions to your family’s needs. If you plan on camping rather than renting a cabin, then make sure you create a separate list of the camping supplies you need. I decided to get a cabin rather than camping because that worked best for us. Also, check the weather forecast before you leave to know what type of clothes you need to take to be prepared.

Our Daily Adventures in McCurtain County

We didn’t have many plans when we left, except for knowing that we wanted to go kayaking and horseback riding.  Below is a summary of the different activities that we did participate in.

Kayaking in Broken Bow

There are so many different options for kayaking trips in Broken Bow. We wanted to take an advanced kayaking trip through the frigid water. I tried to find a decent kayaking trip for all of us to go on and it was fun, but it was a lot shorter than we expected. Keep in mind that you can relax and move slowly down the river, but my kids were trying to race each other to the end while I was making sure no one got hurt.

I used Beavers Bend River floats, which is excellent for beginners. They had friendly service, and once you get to the end of the kayaking trip, they load you up and give you a ride back to the beginning. I would love to take that same trip again without racing to the end and just relax and enjoy the time.

Horseback Riding Trail and the Train Depot

Beavers Bend State Park offers many different activities to keep you busy. I was the most excited about horseback riding and the train ride through the forest. You will be able to see plenty of deer through the woods because the workers sprinkle deer corn near the tracks so that they will come around to eat it.

I assume that the deer are just used to the people and the sound of the train riding through the forest at this point. There is also a very entertaining person speaking over the intercom throughout your ride, which makes it even more enjoyable. There is always a line of people waiting to hop on the train and enjoy the ride.

The horseback riding and train are in the same area, next to a gift shop and concessions. This allows you to grab a snack while waiting for your departure or appointment to hop on a horse. The staff are all very friendly and help you get on the horse, even short people like me with minimal experience. Don’t be afraid to get on a horse and enjoy the trail ride.

The horses are trained and very gentle. They are used to people and well taken care of by the staff. My horse stopped abruptly during my ride, and I didn’t understand why as I was facing forward. One of the staff came back and asked me if everything was okay. I replied that the horse had stopped and I didn’t know why. It just so happened that my horse stopped for a bathroom break! We managed to catch up very quickly as the horse I was riding had a little extra speed in it’s step. They are trained to stay together, and the staff ensures everyone is safe.

The Wood Museum (Forest Heritage Center)

There is also a museum in Beavers Bend State Park that you can visit that is mainly dedicated to wood and Wood Art, as they are famous for this. I would have liked to take more time to listen to the education as we walked through, but the kids were in a hurry to run around and right back out. I guess I’m just more of a history nerd than everyone else.

If you also like history and learning about things, please take the time to walk through and enjoy it. There are speaker boxes, reading material, beautiful wood sculptures, and other wood art.

Janet’s Treasure Chest

While waiting for a callback about a boat ride, I decided to visit one of the most famous souvenir shops in the area, Janet’s Treasure Chest. Outside the shop, you will find large sculptures with which you can pose for photos.

Inside, you will find that there is a large amount of different items to look at. There is everything from historical objects to candy and toys and even more. They have a little something for everyone. This is a great place to window shop or pass the time while waiting to travel to your next location. They tend to be busy here, so be patient and mindful of others.

Taking a Boat Ride

I finally received a callback from someone about taking a ride on their boat. Another popular service there is Tiki boat tours, but they are pretty crowded, and I don’t like big crowds. There are several different services and people offering boat rentals or boat rides for a price. I found a more affordable tour with some fantastic people called B-Pops ride and dive boat tours. They even offer you to go fishing or swimming and are some of the nicest people I met while in Hochatown. I still have their card from the trip, and you can reach them at 580-236-5158.

Where to Stay Near Broken Bow

I have mentioned where I would like to stay, but I have yet to say where we did stay. The cabin we stayed at was outside the tourist area, down some backroads in a more private location. They may have been building another cabin nearby while we were there, but this didn’t bother us. The crew was respectful, and we weren’t bothered by any noise. I didn’t want to share this cabin because I wish I could be greedy and keep it to myself. This place was absolutely amazing.

There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a vast living area, a beautiful kitchen and laundry room, a back porch with a hot tub, an outdoor space and fire pit, and so much more. We loved this cabin so much that during some of our trip, we were perfectly content just staying in the cabin. Let me also tell you that after your trail ride on the horse, you will want to soak in the hot tub the next day.

The only problem I experienced was that the bed was almost too high off the ground to get in it because I’m so short. But I still managed to get in it, and I slept so well. The shower was also amazing. There is nothing wrong that I can say about this place. I fell in love with it. Now, anytime I visit Broken Bow, any other cabins that I stay at fail to live up to my expectations after staying here. I would be wrong not to share this beautiful cabin with the rest of you, so here is the link to book it. I know you will have a fantastic time.

In Conclusion

Broken Bow was an amazing trip the kids and I and the best vacation we have taken. We went on this trip in 2021, and all had the best time. I only wish that we had been able to stay even longer as there are so many more activities that we didn’t get to do that would have been fun like axe throwing, escape rooms, and even racetracks. The only racetrack we saw was more go-karts for little kids. I went with teenagers, but there are also plenty of activities for little kids in the area, and people of all ages will enjoy a family trip to Broken Bow. It’s not too far from us, and I look forward to visiting again one day.

Beating Inflation: Smart Strategies for Your Average Grocery Bill

Beating Inflation: Smart Strategies for Your Average Grocery Bill

In a world where food costs are changing and rising daily, managing your average grocery bill from month to month is hard. The news says that the cost of food is decreasing, but it doesn’t look that way in the grocery store.  Where I live, I can tell the difference in the price increase for things like butter, milk, and eggs because these are things that I purchase regularly.

With prices rising for gas, food, and housing, you must ensure you can still feed your family.  I’m here to help you with simple tips, cashback, and reward options that are scam-free and worth it.  Keep reading to find ways to save on rising food costs and put a meal on the table without breaking the bank.

What is Inflation?

Inflation is the steady increase in the cost of goods or services over some time. You can easily understand this concept by comparing the price of a hamburger in the nineties to a hamburger today. In 1990, your hamburger would have cost around 75 cents, while today’s average cost is $5.99.  That’s a significant increase!  Even though we are making more money now than we did then, it is still a shocking example of how inflation affects prices over time.  Understanding inflation is essential when managing your finances and preparing for the future.

A few years ago, inflation was making headlines across the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic.  People were having difficulty working because so many places were shut down.  The cost of everything, including food, soared as available resources decreased.  Now that everyone is returning to work and their regular routines, the media is trying to make things seem like everything is “back to normal.”  Yet prices continue to rise in multiple industries, impacting every aspect of our daily lives.  Problems like increased demand, disruptions in imports, exports, and other supply chains, and changes in energy prices all contribute to this economic crisis.  As we struggle to provide for our families, we must do everything possible to save on food costs.

Take a Closer Look at Your Grocery Budget

You know those crumpled-up receipts that you stuff into your purse or glove compartment?  It’s time to take those out and review them. You may opt for paperless transactions and use email for receipts. Either way, you must look at them and analyze your spending habits.  I would also review any take-out receipts since you are still using that money to purchase food for yourself or your family.  Are you spending more on takeout or junk food than you thought?  Did that display aisle that caught your eye turn into a cart full of impulse purchases?  Were you hungry when you went inside of the store?

Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship. – Benjamin Franklin

Write out a list of what you must have for each department versus what you bought in each department.  Think of it as organizing the pantry in your kitchen, but instead, it is your pantry of spending. Grab a notebook or use a budgeting app on your phone to help with the visual picture.  Every time you use your card to purchase groceries or go out to eat, write it down.  If you are getting something to drink or a pack of water bottles, write that down, too.  Next, start categorizing those expenses into lists like “Meat, Snacks, Bakery, Frozen” and so on. For example, compare lists of dairy items you have to have, like milk and butter, versus things you don’t have to have, like ice cream and flavored creamer. Find ways to cut costs by either replacing the most expensive items with a cheaper alternative. What are you spending the most money on? Are you a cookie monster or a fruit fanatic?

As for me, I have a love affair with chocolate that may as well be the plot of a bad rom-com.  From 100% pure brooding dark chocolate to sweet, peanut butter-filled milk chocolate, I’m like the main star of a chocolatey soap opera.  It is not a weakness but a chocolate conspiracy in which I am the willing accomplice.

Savvy Grocery Shopping Tips

Great, now that we understand inflation and you have a better understanding of what you splurge on, you are ready to move forward with these tips:

  • Make a List:  I cannot stress this enough.  When I make a list, I usually stick to what is on the list.  If I find myself tempted to purchase something else, I always tell myself to stick to what is on the list. I see many people walk through the store aimlessly without a list.  More than likely, you do know precisely what you need, but stores have strategically placed items and displays so that you can grab something extra on your way down the aisle. Resist the urge to grab these display items. Stick to your list.
  • Review the Weekly Ads: If your local stores send out weekly ads to you in the mail, make sure you take advantage of these money-saving opportunities.  Also, do your research and compare the prices to other retailers in your area.  Thanks to the power of the internet, this is now easier to do from home rather than going from store to store. See who has the best deals on items that you usually purchase.  Take advantage of sales that are buy one get one free, only if the price is free and not the cost it would take to purchase two of them. Our local store has different deals every week, and if you have a grocery card with them (which is free), then you get the special prices they offer.
  • Use coupons:  I am constantly looking for coupons for items that I routinely purchase. I don’t recommend going out of your way to use a coupon for an item that you wouldn’t usually purchase. This often leads to uneaten food in the cabinet because you will use something other than the item you bought.  If you are looking for coupons, visit sites like coupons.com or thekrazycouponlady.com.  Where we live, we are constrained to what options we have to purchase groceries.  If you live in an area like that, you may search your local store’s information to see if they have a website that lists sales or coupons.

By a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens. – John Maynard Keynes

  • Buy in Bulk: Purchase items that you use often in bulk.  For example, we consistently use pasta, diced tomatoes, Rotel, and rice here.  These are things that I would want to buy in bulk because I use them often.  Make sure to check the price and do the math to know that purchasing the item in bulk rather than every week or month is worth it.  For example, you can get one Chicken Pot Pie for $2.98 or 8 chicken pot pies for $14.98, making them only $1.87 each.  Doing your math on bulk items is essential to ensure you get the best price possible.
  • Avoid Shopping Hungry:  We’ve all been shopping at the grocery store when hungry.  I make it a point to eat before I leave so I am not hungry when I arrive, but sometimes I don’t have the time.  Grabbing everything you see is much easier when you have a rumbly stomach, and all the food looks good.  It’s also easier to grab unhealthy junk food and display items when you are hungry and in a hurry to get home and eat. Try to make sure to eat before you go to the store, or you will end up with a cart full of food you never intended to purchase.
  • Take Advantage of Cash Back and Points Programs: I know it is a pain to scan every receipt you get or use an app to shop with, but if you want to save money, I highly recommend using these reward programs. Some are offered by your local store independently, and others are more globally known.  I use FetchRewards and know other people who use Ibotta to save on groceries. I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase items you get cashback and higher points on. But, if you usually purchase something and get rewarded for that, take advantage of it. Use your points on yourself or to get more groceries.

Budget-Friendly Cooking

More families are dining out or eating fast food today than ever before.  Parents are super busy and overwhelmed with work, kids, and life in general.

What most people like about fast food or eating out is that it is convenient in more ways than one. You don’t have to cook or clean up dishes; you can choose what you want to eat.  However, eating out is now costing more than it used to.  In my area, you average about $10-$15 per person eating out unless you have a coupon or know a special.  It is often cheaper to eat at home using a few ingredients than it is to go out to eat.

Here are a few recipes from my blog that you should try out. They only require a few ingredients and can easily feed a family of 6.

In Conclusion

As the cost of food continues to climb, the cost of our grocery bills will keep rising.  By following these tips, you can help plan your budget accordingly.  Buy in bulk, use coupons and sales, and use those leftovers in your fridge.  These small changes can make a big difference when comparing your average grocery bill from three months ago.  Please feel free to share your tips and experiences in the comments section so that we can create a community of like-minded parents, each trying to make the most of their hard-earned dollars.

Fried Rice With Turkey Bacon

Fried Rice With Turkey Bacon

Some years ago my family and I embarked upon a long journey from the north eastern border of Texas to the state of Oregon.  If you know anything about Texas, you know and understand that it is a very large state and crossing it takes a lot of time.  I grew up in Texas and this is nothing new to me.  I remember long trips down to South Texas for family road trips and vacations.  But those stories are for another blog post!

An old friend of mine lives in Oregon and she is the one that has inspired this recipe.  When we arrived in Oregon she had made enough for all of us to eat and everyone really enjoyed it.  I had never made fried rice before this, but now I make this recipe on a regular basis. I’m sure that we probably don’t make it the same way because my husband is picky and that limits what I can add. Every time I make it, there is never any left over and if you don’t get a serving while it’s hot, you won’t be getting one at all. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!

Feel free to add in any extras that you think would be good or even use real bacon if you prefer.

Fried Rice With Turkey Bacon

This fried rice includes turkey bacon, rice, eggs and green onion. Feel free to add in or replace ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 LB Turkey Bacon
  • Green Onions
  • 6 Eggs
  • 2 Cups Rice Whatever rice you prefer is fine.
  • 4 Tablespoons Oil Use whichever oil you prefer.

Instructions

  • Cook the rice early in the day and store it in the fridge. This is optional, but I find that my rice cooks better in the final stage if it's chilled.
  • Cook your turkey bacon. I like to put mine in the air fryer but you can do it in the oven or on the stove. My air fryer already has a setting for it and it doesn't usually take the full ten minutes. I would just keep an eye on it no matter how you cook it to make sure it's crispy but not burnt.
  • Chop up the bacon and set aside or store if you're prepping earlier in the day.
  • Cook the scrambled eggs and chill in the fridge. This is something I like to do, but it isn't the way this is usually done. If you have a preference on this step, please do it the way you want.
  • If you are prepping, go ahead and chop up the green onions and store them until you are ready to cook.
  • Heat the Pan: Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the oil.
  • Add Turkey Bacon: Add your cooked turkey bacon to the pan and heat it up for 2-3 minutes, mixing or turning it to heat it through.
  • Add the Rice: Move the turkey bacon to one side and add the cooked and chilled rice to the pan. Break up any clumps of rice using a spatula.
  • Mix the rice and turkey bacon together in the pan. Add in the scrambled eggs and mix all together to heat through.
  • Mix in your soy sauce or another type of sauce if you prefer and top with chopped green onions. Remove from heat and serve.
